Ermelinda Maçôas
Organizing Committee Member (SICN - 2019)
Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, Portugal
Ermelinda M. S. Maçôas is an independent researcher at IST-ID, a private R&D association hold by the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. She is currently the leader of a motivated young group working on the development of light actuated materials for biomedical applications. Dr. Ermelinda Maçôas completed her PhD in Chemistry in 2005 based on research work conducted in collaboration with the University of Coimbra in Portugal and the University of Helsinki in Finland. She worked as a senior researcher at the Nanoscience Center of the University of Jyväskylä in 2006-2007, Finland, supported by the Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions. She joined the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IN) in 2009, Portugal. Currently, she holds a double appointment with the IN and the Centro de QuÃmica Estrutural of Instituto Superior Técnico. She has 50 papers in ISI index journals, h-index of 19 and over 1100 citations without self-citations.
Her latest achievements relate with the groundbreaking discovery of new nonlinear optical properties of carbon nanomaterials such as selective nonlinear emission in graphene quantum dots and combined circularly polarized and two-photon induced emission in distorted nano graphenes.
Dr. Ermelinda Maçôas is interested in the development of optically responsive materials for imaging and sensing; carbon nanomaterials with a novel or improved optical properties: from graphene quantum dots to nanographene molecules; nonlinear emission, from design to application in imaging and data storage, and charge generation at crystalline organic heterojunctions.
